SUMMARY:They Call it Gravy; WE Call it SAUCE!
DESCRIPTION:Last Local Run Set For Jersey Producer’s Original Musical Before Crossing The Hudson. \nAn original musical written\, produced and directed by Lenny Gatto\, a Kearny-born\, Lakewood-raised New Jerseyan will take the stage in New Jersey this season for three final performances before moving to New York. \n“They Call it Gravy; WE Call it SAUCE!” depicts a first-generation Sicilian-American girl disowned by her Sicilian father and embraced by her fiancé’s Jewish family \nThe musical was nominated for the prestigious Perry Award in the category of Outstanding Original Musical. It is a story of familial love and loss\, conflict and commitment\, regret and redemption. \nA talented cast of New York and New Jersey-based actors\, singers and dancers bring to life events based on real-life characters and actual events. \nGatto takes a musical where no one has before. “Never has there been a musical about the customs of ordinary Italian Americans…no crime…no wise-guys. “This musical\, which I began writing in the 1970s is a long time coming in many ways\,” he explained.

SUMMARY:Innovation in Language Education
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Program at Montclair State University\, through the support of the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies\, has embraced innovative approaches to teaching and professional formation in the past three years to stay in tune with the changed and ever-changing cultural and economic reality of our society in the third millennium. This intensive experimentation\, made possible by enriching collaborations with institutions and individual experts both in our area and in Italy\, has resulted in the implementation of a summer course for high school students on campus\, and two internships in the fields of audiovisual translation for opera and Made in Italy business for the summer of 2017 and 2018 (see details in dedicated pages below). \nFULL INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION AVAILABLE ON ORGANIZER WEBSITE \n1. Summer Italian Intensive Course for College Credit – the only course in the U.S. that currently offers a pre-AP learning experience to high school students in an on-campus setting (see 2018 report and 2019 HS Course on Campus \n2. Internship at the Italian Trade Agency in New York and Choose New Jersey in Princeton – a paid pre-professional experience in two key offices for the development and management of Italian business in our metropolitan area (see 2017 report and 2018 report) \n3. Internship in Audiovisual Translation for Opera in Macerata\, Italy – a unique opportunity to work with a professional team during an opera season of great caliber (see 2017 report and 2018 report) \nThese programs essentially invite the students to stay connected with Montclair State during the summer and take advantage of extraordinary opportunities. Whether students spend part of the summer on campus\, or sign up for a paid internship in New York or Italy\, they effectively decide to spend the summer with Montclair State\, hence the sub-title of this event loosely translated “Stay with Montclair State in summer\,” which is a pun in Italian (“estate” means summer and “restate” means stay). \nThe event designs a space to illustrate these new programs with the contribution of a select number of the participants to this program including faculty organizers\, High School students\, High School teachers who recommend the course and/or belong to our local High School consortium\, interns\, internship providers\, donors\, administrators\, etc. We envision an interactive exchange with the audience which will also be made possible by the submission of questions and stories in advance via a dedicated page that will be populated by writing to inserra@montclair.edu up to one week prior to the event. It takes a village to develop and bring these programs to fruition\, and an even broader community to make them meaningful. We look forward to widespread participation across the media\, local businesses and trade associations\, along with educators active in Italian and other foreign languages as well\, since it is our hope that such programs can foster a dialogue and identify best practices for all of us engaged in trans-national and trans-lingual education. \nEssentially these programs create two critical bridges – one between the university and the high school systems\, and one between the university and the professional worlds – and thus define a virtuous circle in the Italian teaching/learning environment that can be extended to other languages. \n

SUMMARY:Book Presentation: Pre-Occupied Spaces Remapping Italy's Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies by Teresa Fiore (Fordham UP 2017)
DESCRIPTION:The Departments of Sociology\, History\, Political Science and Law\, and Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University are pleased to present a conversation about Pre-Occupied Spaces: Remapping Italy’s Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies\, a new book by Dr. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies at Montclair State University)\, published by Fordham University Press in May 2017. \nBy linking Italy’s long history of emigration to all continents in the world\, contemporary transnational migrations directed toward it\, as well as the country’s colonial legacies\, Fiore’s book poses Italy as a unique laboratory to rethink national belonging at large in our era of massive demographic mobility. Showing how immigration in Italy today is preoccupied by its past emigration and colonialism\, and how the commonalities between the two phenomena can potentially dispel preoccupations\, the book offers interpretative routes about demographic and cultural movements that can be relevant to Europe at large as well as the U.S. \nThis panel will include a presentation by the author Teresa Fiore in discussion with Montclair State colleagues Nancy Carnevale from the History Department (coeditor of Fordham UP Critical Studies in Italian America)\, Stephen Ruszczyk from the Sociology Department and Tony Spanakos\, Chair of Political Science and Law Department. \nMonday\, December 11\, 2017 – 6:30-8:30pm‌\nFor more info on the event\, click here.\nRSVP required here by Fri. SUMMARY:What Italian Language(s) Does Italian Film Speak?
DESCRIPTION:This is the third part of the “Critical Made in Italy” series\, designed by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies in 2016 and inspired by a collection of essays edited by Daniele Balicco – Made in Italy and Culture. \nThis episode looks at what can be considered the quintessential Made in Italy product: the Italian language. The specific lens adopted is cinema given the fundamental role it plays in the diffusion of the Italian language abroad\, or rather the Italian languages since Italian cinema agilely records regional dialects\, foreign language interferences\, as well as parlances used in specific job sectors or social circles. Most interestingly\, the Italian language circulates on international screens through the voices of Italian actors thanks to the practice of subtitling\, which ensures that dialogues are conveyed in their original forms in terms of pronunciation and inflection\, while being enriched by the body language of the actors. A non-Italian-speaking audience is thus exposed to the complexity of the Italian linguistic palette through a medium that in mirroring the country’s contemporary reality literally functions as a “sounding board” for the Italian language in ways that are more incisive than\, for instance\, opera whose Italian is less linked to today’s Italian\, or theater which can be brought to foreign audiences much less frequently. \nRSVP required here by Fri. Oct. 13\nSee flyer

Coonrod’s re-visioning of Shakespeare’s classic on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the formation of the Venice ghetto stemmed from a desire to make the play speak to forms of otherness and exclusion across time and space. Focused on Coonrod’s own illustration of her project\, its staging in the Venice ghetto and now its adaptation for the Kasser Theater\, the conversation will also include presentations by Alessandro Cassin on the Jewish Ghetto in Venice\, and by Teresa Fiore on immigration and exclusion as both general categories and specific practices. \nThis panel highlights the global relevance of Shakespeare’s play – recently described by Stephen Greenblatt as “a cure against xenophobia” (see article below) – and in particular of Coonrod’s approach to it\, characterized by multi-lingualism and ethnic\, racial\, and gender diversity. The conversation aims at showing how at a time of socio-political uncertainty for the Western World in its experience of “the other\,” the play as well as the Venice ghetto where it was staged have precious ethical and cultural lessons to share about human rights\, and cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue. It is in this context that Venice can function as a metaphor of the world.\n\nOnline RSVP required by Monday\, September 25th\nhttps://www.montclair.edu/chss/inserra-chair/events/2017-18/merchant-of-venice/
