SUMMARY:2019 Summer Italian Intensive Course for College Credit
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FORM FLYERVIDEO \nRegistration is now open through April 30 for this one-of-a-kind course designed for high school students on a university campus\, available at Montclair State in an intensive summer format\, including guest speakers and off-campus tours. In just three weeks (Mon-Thur\, July 8-25\, 2019)\, it prepares students to move with confidence from Italian 3 to an AP or advanced Italian class\, while granting 3 college credits at a very affordable price. The course has been offered for two years in a row (2017 and 2018) and in its third edition in 2019 it will offer for the first time a RESIDENTIAL OPTION to better serve the high school population of New Jersey and the Tri-State Area at large. \nTuition: $750 (tuition\, registration\, and activity fees – note that lunches are not included for non-residential students)\nParking: $25\nResidential package: $588 for room (accommodation Sun evening through Thur afternoon in The Heights dormitory) and board (meal plan valid at any time in all cafeterias open in summer: list with opening times). \nSEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE thanks to the New Jersey Italian Heritage Committee\n(the registration form contains income-related questions for scholarship applicants). \nTaught in the target language by a native speaker\, this immersive approach leads to the study of more complex structures of the language and the expression of emotion\, personal opinions\, agreements and judgments\, both in written and oral forms\, and as part of thematic units on such topics as: immigration and Italian identity; Made in Italy (food\, fashion) and sustainability; visual representation of culture in film and advertising\, among others. Students benefit from an engaging college experience on a campus boasting a dynamic Italian program and proximity to New York City. The course also includes three off-campus visits: Eataly Food Marketplace in the Flatiron District\, Scavolini Home Furniture in Soho/The Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side\, and Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring (Hudson Valley). \nThe course is offered by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies and the Italian Program (Department of Modern Languages and Literatures) at Montclair State U\, in association with the Early College Program and Summer Sessions\, with the co-sponsorship of IACE (Italian American Committee on Education)\, and the generous support of the New Jersey Italian Heritage Committee. It is the only course of this type in Italian in the U.S. It has been recognized as a Best Practice in Italian teaching in the Tri-State Area at the 2018 national meeting of the U.S. “enti gestori” (managing units)\, which are in charge of the promotion of Italian language in connection with the Italian Consulates. \nOver time\, the summer course has produced a consortium of local high schools\, which is bound to expand given the great benefits to both the HS and the university systems created by initiatives such as this course. \nDo you have any questions? Please visit our FAQ PAGE\, and for further inquiries contact the course coordinator Patti Grunther (gruntherp@montclair.edu) or write to the office at inserra@montclair.edu.

SUMMARY:They Call it Gravy; WE Call it SAUCE!
DESCRIPTION:Last Local Run Set For Jersey Producer’s Original Musical Before Crossing The Hudson. \nAn original musical written\, produced and directed by Lenny Gatto\, a Kearny-born\, Lakewood-raised New Jerseyan will take the stage in New Jersey this season for three final performances before moving to New York. \n“They Call it Gravy; WE Call it SAUCE!” depicts a first-generation Sicilian-American girl disowned by her Sicilian father and embraced by her fiancé’s Jewish family \nThe musical was nominated for the prestigious Perry Award in the category of Outstanding Original Musical. It is a story of familial love and loss\, conflict and commitment\, regret and redemption. \nA talented cast of New York and New Jersey-based actors\, singers and dancers bring to life events based on real-life characters and actual events. \nGatto takes a musical where no one has before. “Never has there been a musical about the customs of ordinary Italian Americans…no crime…no wise-guys. “This musical\, which I began writing in the 1970s is a long time coming in many ways\,” he explained.

SUMMARY:Innovation in Language Education
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Program at Montclair State University\, through the support of the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies\, has embraced innovative approaches to teaching and professional formation in the past three years to stay in tune with the changed and ever-changing cultural and economic reality of our society in the third millennium. This intensive experimentation\, made possible by enriching collaborations with institutions and individual experts both in our area and in Italy\, has resulted in the implementation of a summer course for high school students on campus\, and two internships in the fields of audiovisual translation for opera and Made in Italy business for the summer of 2017 and 2018 (see details in dedicated pages below). \nFULL INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION AVAILABLE ON ORGANIZER WEBSITE \n1. Summer Italian Intensive Course for College Credit – the only course in the U.S. that currently offers a pre-AP learning experience to high school students in an on-campus setting (see 2018 report and 2019 HS Course on Campus \n2. Internship at the Italian Trade Agency in New York and Choose New Jersey in Princeton – a paid pre-professional experience in two key offices for the development and management of Italian business in our metropolitan area (see 2017 report and 2018 report) \n3. Internship in Audiovisual Translation for Opera in Macerata\, Italy – a unique opportunity to work with a professional team during an opera season of great caliber (see 2017 report and 2018 report) \nThese programs essentially invite the students to stay connected with Montclair State during the summer and take advantage of extraordinary opportunities. Whether students spend part of the summer on campus\, or sign up for a paid internship in New York or Italy\, they effectively decide to spend the summer with Montclair State\, hence the sub-title of this event loosely translated “Stay with Montclair State in summer\,” which is a pun in Italian (“estate” means summer and “restate” means stay). \nThe event designs a space to illustrate these new programs with the contribution of a select number of the participants to this program including faculty organizers\, High School students\, High School teachers who recommend the course and/or belong to our local High School consortium\, interns\, internship providers\, donors\, administrators\, etc. We envision an interactive exchange with the audience which will also be made possible by the submission of questions and stories in advance via a dedicated page that will be populated by writing to inserra@montclair.edu up to one week prior to the event. It takes a village to develop and bring these programs to fruition\, and an even broader community to make them meaningful. We look forward to widespread participation across the media\, local businesses and trade associations\, along with educators active in Italian and other foreign languages as well\, since it is our hope that such programs can foster a dialogue and identify best practices for all of us engaged in trans-national and trans-lingual education. \nEssentially these programs create two critical bridges – one between the university and the high school systems\, and one between the university and the professional worlds – and thus define a virtuous circle in the Italian teaching/learning environment that can be extended to other languages. \n

SUMMARY:Jhumpa Lahiri & Alessandro Giammei Domenico Starnone’s Trick: A Reading and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Sharp\, succinct storytelling and breathtaking prose combine in a new novel\, Trick\, by Domenico Starnone\, author of the New York Times editor’s pick\, Ties. His work is beautifully rendered in English by Jhumpa Lahiri\, who will read from Trick and discuss both the novel and the art of translation with her colleague and fellow-translator\, Alessandro Giammei. \nImagine a duel between an elderly man and a mere boy. The same blood runs through their veins. One\, Daniele Mallarico\, is a successful illustrator whose reputation is slowly fading. The other\, Mario\, is his four-year-old grandson. The older combatant has lived for years in solitude\, focusing obsessively on his work. The younger one has been left by his querulous parents with his grandfather for a 72-hour stay. Shut inside an apartment in Naples that is filled with the ghosts of Mallarico’s own childhood\, grandfather and grandson match wits\, while outside lurks Naples\, a wily\, violent\, and passionate city whose influence is not easily shaken. Trick is a gripping\, wry\, brilliantly devised drama\, “an extremely playful literary composition\,” as Jhumpa Lahiri describes it in her introduction\, about aging\, family\, art\, and reconciling with one’s past. \nDomenico Starnone is an Italian writer\, screenwriter and journalist.
